Part-Time Work

Can I work in the UK?

Check what your passport sticker (entry clearance or residence permit) says. If you are in the UK with student immigration permission and your passport sticker says "Work (and any changes) must be authorised" or "Able to work as authorised by the Secretary of State", you are allowed to work during your studies. If your passport sticker says "No work", you must not work in the UK.

How many hours can I work while I study?

If you have student immigration permission that allows you to take employment, you can work up to 20 hours a week during term-time and full-time during your holidays. You can also undertake a work placement which is part of a sandwich course or an internship, but these are subject to restrictions. More information about these regulations and working in the UK can be found on the UK Council for International Student Affairs website.

Will I need a National Insurance number?

Yes. Your National Insurance number (NINo) is a unique personal number which is used to record your National Insurance (NI) contributions. You do not need the number to start work, but must obtain one when you get a job. You can apply if you can show you have the right to work in the UK and you are either in work or actively seeking work. To register for your National Insurance number and for further advice, please call 0845 6000 643. Be prepared to provide your name, contact telephone number, UK address, date of birth and (if relevant) employment details. An interview will then be arranged. You may have to wait up to two months. If you are not already in employment, you may also have to prove that you are seeking work. You could do this by providing application forms or letters from recruitment agencies or employers.

How can I find out about available Part time work?

The Careers Service at Holborn College will not provide you with part time work but we are very happy to help you with writing your CV, interview training and also suggesting where would be a good place to start.
