MA Financial Management Postgraduate Degree
Introduction to the course
The fast-track MA (Masters) Financial Management (Fast Track) degree is designed to allow fully-qualified accountants (CIMA, CIPFA, ACCA, ICAEW, ICAS, and ICAI) to achieve an additional qualification with between six and 12 months study.
Many students immediately follow their ACCA or CIMA qualification with an MA in Financial Management to achieve
both qualifications in the shortest time possible.
This course allows students to combine their existing professional knowledge and experience with high level research skills to complete a piece of research relevant to the field of financial management.
Assessment method
Students will study in two distinct phases, a taught phase and a research phase. The taught phase is assessed in the form of a 5,000 word research proposal, whilst the research phase is assessed in the form of a 20,000 word dissertation.
Summary of taught phase
This phase provides students with key knowledge and skills that will underpin the success of their dissertation. After completing the module, students will be able to:
- identify and assess qualitative and quantitative research methodologies
- recognise and evaluate the conceptual issues and practical procedures that are associated with qualitative and quantitative research
- examine existing research within the area of their research project
- produce a research proposal and plan for their proposed research project
- use suitable computer packages to analyse qualitative and quantitative information.
Students are expected to complete a 5,000 word research proposal. This research proposal, once approved, will form the heart of the dissertation.
Summary of research phase
Students are expected to complete a 20,000 word piece of original research in the form of a dissertation. Students select and formulate their own research project with guidance from their module tutor and their supervisor. The only restriction on topic is that it has to have strong financial management content.
Our experience of advanced level dissertations demonstrates that they vary greatly in nature between students. Some, for instance, have a strong international focus whilst others relate to a single country or company. Some dissertations are qualitative in their approach whilst other students adopt high-level statistical analysis.
