Course overview

The BA Business Management with HRM including a Foundation Year course has been designed to provide a very comprehensive grounding in the main areas of business but also allowing students to follow a particular pathway, such as Human Resource Management, to increase knowledge and experience associated with their field of specialism. The focus of the degree is to supply theoretical substance to core areas of business but it also helps students develop analytical and decision-making skills.

The BA Business Management with HRM including Foundation Year degree (UCAS course code N6N2) is ideal for students who wish to gain a broad understanding of business while gaining an in-depth knowledge of Human Resource Management. This degree has a particular emphasis on applications of HRM in a strategic business context.

In Year 1, you will have the opportunity to study towards the KPA Level 3 Award in Employability alongside your degree. This Award is designed to build on what you learn in your degree in order to help you develop employability skills that are relevant for the workplace.

This degree runs on a 2 day timetable*, designed to let you study with more flexibility and make the most out of your time outside the classroom.

After completion of Year 1, students have the option to specialise in either HRM, Economics, Marketing or International Business.

5 GCSEs at A-C, together with evidence of at least 12 years of education e.g. partial completion of A Level, BTEC, International Baccalaureate or Access course.

  • IELTS 5.5* - with at least 5.5 in each component

Modules

BA Business Management with HRM including Foundation Year students will study for 4 years, with 2 semesters per year. In each semester, students will study four 15 credit modules, making a total of 120 credits per year. In the final year, students will study three 15 credit modules per semester and will undertake a 30 credit final project comprising of their own original research in their chosen field.

Teaching & contact time

The BA Business Management with HRM including Foundation Year is a full-time course, whereby learning takes places both in and outside the classroom environment. Contact hours are split between lectures and seminars, with particular emphasis being placed on the seminar environment, which promotes group interaction and facilitates personal support. Face-to-face learning is supported by online resources, including learning videos, reading materials and online testing.

In addition, students are expected and encouraged to engage in private study and preparation. In general, we expect students to engage in 2 hours private study for every 1 hour of formal class teaching.

Examination & assessment

Students are assessed at the end of each semester (2 per year) in the form of assignments and examinations. In all years there is a combination of coursework and examination.

Examinations are 2½ hours in Years 1 and 2, and 3 hours in Year 3. Each module should provide revision towards the end of each semester to help students prepare for assessments. Courseworks increase in size from Year 0 to Year 3 and in some modules will include both a written assignment and a presentation.

Study resources

Study materials for each module of the BA Business Management with HRM including Foundation Year are produced by the module leader in conjunction with Kaplan Holborn College’s team of subject specialists. Printed and online materials will usually be distributed throughout each semester. In addition students will have access to one of the largest libraries in the private higher education sector.

All Kaplan Holborn College programmes are fully supported by our Virtual Learning Environment 'Moodle'. Moodle is the first point of call for academic information, such as details of assessments, lecture sequences and online copies of all study materials.
