Its more than just a Society!!!
Immediately after the inauguration in October 2010, the HOCLAS Executive Committee swung into action with numerous events that resulted in tremendous success. The events that ought to be highlighted were the contentious but highly stimulating impromptu debate on “The reintroduction of the death penalty,” and the public speaking skills workshop, which was much appreciated.
The culmination of the first term was an auspicious affair dubbed “Term Finale” where HOCLAS was officially introduced to the staff, law faculty and general student body at Holborn College. In attendance, was our esteemed Law program managers/coordinators and management, including our Head of College; Jenny Birch, Head of Academic & Student Services Tim Maugherman, Programme Manager for Law Dr Alexandra Jacobs and Mr Richard Heald a distinguished law faculty member and appointed Patron of the Society. HOCLAS members were afforded the opportunity to dialogue with staff and request support and guidance for juggling college success with extracurricular activities, and as well discussions on nonacademic concerns. However, the revolving tandem focused on the upcoming in-house mooting competition scheduled for early March where multiple teams will be paired off against each other on various hypothetical cases deliberating several aspects of law as relates to Tort, Contract and Criminal Law, subsequent to which outstanding performers will be awarded with prizes.
Current events scheduled for this term such as Mooting Workshops, Career Guidance Seminars proffered by visiting barristers and solicitors, and the inaugural election of HOCLAS Executive Committee will focus on inclusion of class representatives from both London and Wales, faculty members, program managers and coordinators and as such, will enlist the assistance of these persons to perpetuate HOCLAS vision of building a strong, supportive law society coupled with diverse knowledge and experience from our college community.
The HOCLAS Executive Committee is confident that this gathering was only the initial cord of a strong and lasting relationship between the Society and the staff/faculty of Holborn College. This society will continue to feature experienced law faculty and senior students in its meetings and events in order to provide members with the most beneficial experience participants of the college’s Law Society can attain.
