Can I work in the UK?

Can I work in the UK?

Whether you can work in the UK depends on when you applied for your visa.

If you applied for your visa before 4 July 2011 then you should be given permission to work on a part time basis. Please check what your passport states on your entry clearance or residence permit. If you are in the UK with limited leave to remain and your passport states “Work (and any changes) must be authorised” or "Able to work as authorised by the Secretary of State”, you will have permission to work during your studies. if your passport states “No work”, you must not work in the UK.

If you applied for your Tier 4 visa after 4 July 2011 then you will not be given permission to work. Holborn College is a private higher education college. Only students studying at a higher education institution (HEI) will be given permission to work part time.

If I Can Work, How Many Hours Can I Work While I Study?

If you have student immigration permission that allows you to take employment, you can work up to 20 hours a week during term-time and full-time during your holidays (unless stated otherwise on your visa). You can also undertake an internship, but these are subject to restrictions. More information about these regulations and working in the UK can be found on the UK Council for International Student Affairs website.

Will I Need A National Insurance Number?

Yes. Your National Insurance number (NINo) is a unique personal number which is used to record your National Insurance (NI) contributions. You do not need the number to start work, but must obtain one when you get a job. You can apply if you can show you have the right to work in the UK and you are either in work or actively seeking work.

To register for your National Insurance number and for further advice, please call 0845 6000 643. Be prepared to provide your name, contact telephone number, UK address, date of birth and (if relevant) employment details. An interview will then be arranged. You may have to wait up to two months. If you are not already in employment, you may also have to prove that you are seeking work. You could do this by providing application forms or letters from recruitment agencies or employers
